‘A Jolt of Energy’ to San Francisco’s Homelessness Response System

A feature story on Urban.org addressing the Chronic Homelessness Initiative and how philanthropy can address complex social issues.
Project
Role
I created custom photography in San Francisco, California and designed the layout of this story. Because so many people experiencing homelessness struggle with mental health and substance abuse issues, it is my view that they cannot give informed consent to be photographed. This made photography difficult at times, but also challenged me to work differently in ways that ultimately made this project more collaborative and compassionate. Analytics show that the average viewer spent twice as much time on the page and read more of the story than our usual benchmarks, making this a very successful narrative feature for the Urban Institute.
